At the heart of any computer, modern or early, is a (usually) simple circuit called an ALU, or Arithmetic Logic Unit. Its comprised of a few simple operations which can be done fairly quickly. This, along with a small amount of memory running at processor speed called registers, make up what is known as the CPU, or Central Processing Unit.

A CPU isn't very useful unless there is some way to communicate to it, and recieve information back from it. This is usually known as a Bus. The Bus is the input/output, or I/O gateway for the CPU. The primary area the CPU communicates with is system memory, commonly known as RAM, or Random Access Memory. Depending on the platform, the CPU may communicate with other parts of the system, or it may communicate just through memory.

The "word" size of a platform is the native amount of bits that can be moved over the RAM<->CPU bus. Early computers varied on bit sizes, but most modern computers work in multiples of 8 bits, commonly known as a Byte. The first general purpose CPU on a chip, built by Intel, was the 8080 built in 1974. The 8080 used an 8 bit word, meaning it would communicate over the bus 1 byte at a time. In contrast, the 80386 has a 32 bit (4 byte) word, and the IA64 is a 64 bit (8 byte) word.

Fanboy is a term used to describe an individual (usually male, though the feminine version fangirl may be used for females) who is utterly devoted to a single fannish subject, or to a single point of view within that subject, often to the point where it is considered an obsession. Fanboys remain loyal to their particular obsession, disregarding any factors that differ from their point of view. Fanboys are also typically aggressive and hateful towards the opposing brand or competition of their obsession regardless of its merits or achievements.

Background
Fanboys are attributed with a sycophantic devotion to the creators and principles behind a work with which they are currently enthralled, but will quickly move their attention elsewhere once something better or just newer comes along. Fanboys are noted for a very emotional attachment to their chosen subject, often taking negative remarks about it as a personal attack. They will readily engage in debates, but will fall back on emotional responses. For example, a "fanboy" may go out of their way to point out negative and often untrue statements about their obsession's rivals; this is commonly known as FUD.

The stereotypical image of the fanboy is as an unkempt, socially awkward, young man who may be perceived as a loud mouthed pseudo-intellectual. As electronic entertainment gained popularity, the term became increasingly applied to video gamers and television addicts. As a result, a subculture emerged which readily labeled itself as fanboys. Within this group, more effort is taken to fit in with a perceived standard, resulting in a more outgoing attitude, even among those with insecurities. This outgoing stance is often felt to be abrasive by those not involved in the culture as deeply.

More recently, especially in the video game industry, fans of a particular video game console manufacturer have begun exhibiting slavish devotion to their brand of choice. Conversely they hold an unreasonable amount of animosity towards the other brands which they consider to be competition. They are extremely rude to fans of the other companies or even people who don’t hail complete and utter devotion to the object of their fanaticism. These people seek out every opportunity to annoy others whose opinions differ from theirs. This trend has led to the term “fanboy” deriving a more and more negative connotation.

History of fanboys and the term
The term originated in comic book circles, to describe someone who immersed himself in the fictional worlds of comics and the culture of comics fandom. The term is often used in a derogatory manner by other less obsessed fans. In the songs of the fannish parody musician Luke Ski, many characters proudly consider themselves fanboys. The term is most commonly associated with adolescent and teen males but can be applicable to any age or sex. Common subjects of reverence by fanboys are TV shows, movies, music, anime, comic books, cars, video game consoles, video games, operating systems, MMORPGs, hardware and software companies.

Popular depictions of Fanboy stereotypes include the Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons and columnist Larry Groznic from the satirical newspaper The Onion.

The earliest published uses of the word "fanboy" have been dated to 1982. One reference is to the cover of the "Official Underground and Newave Comix Price Guide". On this cover page are sketched overweight, overzealous comic book collectors wearing T-shirts that state "Fanboys of America," and are describing the extreme measures they would go to, including moving to San Francisco, to preserve their comics. Also published in 1982, a comic strip appeared in Jim Engel and Chuck Fiala's "Fandom Confidential" comic. In the strip, Jim and Chuck met comic artist/writer John Byrne and collapsed into "mindless paroxysms of adoration." The John Byrne character responded that they were "a couple of fanboys in bondage" which was a play on words referring to a Monty Python skit in which an Elizabethan era character reads what she claims to be "'Gayboys in Bondage' by William Shakespeare". Another early use is in a smart-alec editorial reply by "Ambush Bug" to a letter in his comic in 1985.

Villages and coastal communities in Somalia, as far as 4,500 km (2,800 miles) from the epicentre of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake were swept away and destroyed by the resulting tsunami on 26 December 2004. As of 5 January 2005 the confirmed death toll stood at 298. According to presidential spokesperson Yusuf Mohamed Ismail of the transitional government, more than 50,000 people were displaced.

Most of the damage was in the coastal region of the semi-autonomous Puntland area, particularly the region between Hafun in the Bari region and Garacad in the Mudug region. The narrow and low-lying peninsula of Hafun, 1150 km (715 mi) northeast of Mogadishu, was particularly devastated. In Puntland, rising waters destroyed properties in especially Hafun and Kulub, while parts of the towns and villages of Bander Beyla, Eyl, Foar and Bargaal were flooded. Other coastal areas including Lower Juba were also somewhat affected. The UN reported that the water destroyed 1,180 homes, smashed 2,400 boats and rendered freshwater wells and reservoirs unusable. The main sand bridge connecting Hafun to the mainland was damaged. As of 6 January, the village of Kulub, near Gara'ad, was still partially submerged. At Kulub and other places such as Hurdiye, teams from the World Food Programme reported that all the boats and other fishing equipment used by the residents to make a livelihood had been lost.

Aftermath
Around 12 tonnes of rice, maize and vegetable oil were delivered to Hafun on 30 December, four days after the tsunami. Previous attempts to deliver aid failed after trucks were unable to pass tsunami damaged roads near Foar, a village of 1000 people living in mud-and-wattle huts that was destroyed. The main sand bridge which connects the Hafun peninsula to the mainland was damaged. The twelve tonnes were then transferred onto two four-wheel drive vehicles that managed the 60 km (40 mi) trip from Foar to Hafun in seven hours. The UN warned that the tsunami had worsened the situation after four years of drought in northern Somalia and further aid is desperately needed. It has distributed 200 tonnes of food aid to 12,000 people, but states that food for 30,000 is needed. The UN has four teams in the area and on 4 January appealed for US$13,000,000 to assist 54,000 Somalis affected by the tsunami. As part of the flash inter-agency appeal of US$977,000,000 made by the UN Secretary-General on 6 January, US$10,000,000 was requested for Somalia. In February, the U.S. government made one million dollars available for tsunami relief in Somalia.

Much of the remote 1,000 km (600 mi) coast is controlled by various clan-based militias, making obtaining accurate information difficult. Relief officials have been unable to make observation flights because of the fear of being fired upon by anti-aircraft batteries. The transitional Somali government is based in Nairobi, Kenya because the capital city of Mogadishu is too unsafe. Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi cancelled a trip on 4 January 2005, which would have been his first visit to Somalia since being appointed.

Aftermath
Around 12 tons of rice, maize and vegetable oil were delivered to Hafun on 30 December, four days after the tsunami.
