== Consumer Confidence Index ==

The Private Consumption Expenditure accounts for more than 60% of the Indian GDP. In economies like these, consumer confidence as an economic indicator of household consumption expenditure is a key driver of economic growth. Consumers tend to increase consumption when they feel confident about the current and future economic situation of the country and their own financial situation. Therefore, Consumer Confidence Indices have proven to be reliable indicators of the current and the future economic health of market economies. The Consumer Confidence Index for India "CCI"[http://www.bostonanalytics.com/india_watch/india_watch.html] is derived from a monthly survey of 10,000 targeted respondents across fifteen Indian cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Nagpur, Kochi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, Patna, and Vishakhapatnam via face-to-face interviews. The sample aims at capturing the major contributors to the personal consumption component of the GDP.

The Index for April 2009 stood at 74.1, a rise of approximately 1% from the previous month. However, it is important to note that since significant components of the composite index remain mired in pessimism, it is best to interpret April’s positive number as a “bounce” in the composite index, as opposed to a positive change in trend. The consumer spending sentiment component, in particular, remains pessimistic and continues to weaken.April’s increase in consumer confidence is attributable to improvements in sentiment regarding expected economic conditions, household income, and job security.

The questionnaire is based on 25 questions devised to capture the Indian Consumers perceptions regarding various macro and micro economic variables. Some of these variables include, employment conditions, spending plans on various commodities, savings etc.

The  Consumer Confidence Index for India is computed from responses to 25 questions covering various variables known to affect consumer confidence. As a first step towards computing the Index, diffusion values (representing the positive bias in responses) are computed for each question. Secondly, each diffusion value is weighted based on the importance of this variable in driving overall perception of economic conditions. Finally, the grand Index is computed as the ratio of the weighted sum of the diffusion values of the current survey and the base survey.
