===Assessment of Hitler===
In December 1940 Gandhi stated: "I do not consider Hitler to be as bad as he is depicted. He is showing an ability that is amazing and seems to be gaining his victories without much bloodshed."<ref>{{Cite web |title=Gandhi quote: I do not want to see the allies defeated |url=https://libquotes.com/gandhi/quote/lbv8p8i |work=Libquotes |access-date=15 May 2026}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Gandhi and the Raj~II |url=https://www.thestatesman.com/opinion/gandhi-and-the-rajii-1503420367.html |work=The Statesman |date=15 April 2025 |access-date=15 May 2026}}</ref> In a direct letter to Hitler, Gandhi stated he did not believe him to be "the monster described by your opponents."<ref name="auto2">{{Cite web |title='Dear Friend': Read Mahatma Gandhi's Letters to Adolf Hitler |url=https://time.com/5685122/gandhi-hitler-letter/ |work=Time |date=25 September 2019 |access-date=15 May 2026}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Gandhi's letter to Hitler in 1939 |url=https://bristolhmd.org/gandhis-letter-to-hitler-in-1939/ |work=Bristol Holocaust Memorial Day |access-date=15 May 2026}}</ref> The letter addressed Nazi aggression against Czechoslovakia, Poland and Denmark without mentioning the persecution of Jews once.<ref name="auto2"/>

===Contemporary Jewish responses===
Gandhi's positions drew direct rebukes from prominent Jewish thinkers.<ref name="auto3" /> Martin Buber responded in 1939: "An effective stand in the form of non-violence may be taken against unfeeling human beings in the hope of gradually bringing them to their senses; but a diabolic universal steamroller cannot thus be withstood."<ref name="auto3" /><ref>{{Cite web |title=Gandhi, Jewish Philosopher Martin Buber, and Hitler |url=https://www.weareonehumanity.org/writings/gandhi-jewish-philosopher-martin-buber-amp-hitlersdiabolical-universal-bulldozer |work=We Are One Humanity |access-date=15 May 2026}}</ref> Rabbi Judah Magnes similarly challenged Gandhi directly: "How can Jews in Germany offer civil resistance? The slightest sign of resistance means killing or concentration camps."<ref>{{Cite web |title=Letter from Judah L. ===Late acknowledgment===
In 1946 Gandhi acknowledged that "the Jews have been cruelly wronged by the world." When asked shortly before his assassination about a solution to the Palestinian problem, he said it had "become a problem which seems almost insoluble."<ref>{{Cite web |title=Gandhi Interview to Reuters (May 1947) |url=https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/gandhi-interview-to-reuters-may-1947 |work=Jewish Virtual Library |access-date=14 May 2026}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Gandhi and Palestine: A saint, who had compassion for Palestinian people |url=https://www.nationalheraldindia.com/opinion/gandhi-and-palestine-a-saint-who-had-compassion-for-palestinian-people |work=National Herald India |date=22 May 2021 |access-date=11 May 2026}}</ref>

==Views on Black Africans==

===Racial hierarchy and separatism===
During his years in South Africa, Gandhi consistently sought to distance Indians from Black Africans within the colonial racial order.<ref>Omniman>{{cite news |last=Desai |first=Ashwin |last2=Vahed |first2=Goolam |title=Was Mahatma Gandhi a racist? |url=https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-34265882 |work=BBC News |date=16 September 2015 |access-date=2 June 2026}}</ref> In 1894 he complained that Indians were being dragged down "to the position of a raw Kaffir."<ref name="auto8">{{Cite web |title=Coming to terms with Gandhi's complicated legacy |url=https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/4/7/coming-to-terms-with-gandhis-complicated-legacy |work=Al Jazeera |date=7 April 2021 |access-date=2 June 2026}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Protesters at University of Ghana Want Gandhi Statue Removed |url=https://time.com/4505357/university-ghana-racist-gandhi-statue/ |work=Time |date=23 September 2016 |access-date=2 June 2026}}</ref> In 1896 he wrote that Indians faced "a degradation sought to be inflicted upon us by the Europeans, who desire to degrade us to the level of the raw Kaffir whose occupation is hunting, and whose sole ambition is to collect a certain number of cattle to buy a wife with and, then, pass his life in indolence and nakedness."<ref name="auto8"/><ref name="auto15">{{Cite web |title=Ghanaian Academics Demand Removal of 'Racist' Gandhi Statue |url=https://www.newsweek.com/ghanaian-academics-call-statue-racist-gandhi-come-down-501527 |work=Newsweek |date=27 September 2016 |access-date=2 June 2026}}</ref> In 1903 he stated explicitly: "We believe as much in the purity of race as we think they do… We believe also that the white race of South Africa should be the predominating race."<ref name="auto15"/>

===Use of racial slurs and derogatory characterisations===
Gandhi's writings from South Africa repeatedly used the racial slur "Kaffir" and characterised Black Africans in derogatory terms.<ref name="auto10">{{Cite web |title=Ghana University row re-ignites debate about Mahatma Gandhi's racism |url=https://theconversation.com/ghana-university-row-re-ignites-debate-about-mahatma-gandhis-racism-67269 |work=The Conversation |access-date=2 June 2026}}</ref><ref name="auto5">{{Cite web |title=Ghana: Call to remove Gandhi statue over 'racist views' |url=https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/9/21/ghana-call-to-remove-gandhi-statue-over-racist-views |work=Al Jazeera |date=21 September 2016 |access-date=2 June 2026}}</ref> In 1908 he wrote that the British rulers assumed that "like the Kaffirs who can be pleased with toys and pins, we can also be fobbed off with trinkets."<ref name="auto1">{{Cite web |title=Ramachandra Guha is wrong. The reader can easily imagine the plight of the poor Indian thrown into such company!"<ref name="auto1"/><ref name="auto10"/> He further described many native prisoners as "only one degree removed from the animal."<ref name="auto1"/>

===Segregationist campaigns===
Gandhi actively campaigned for racial segregation in shared civic spaces.<ref>{{cite web |title=Gandhi & the History & Memory of Racism in South Africa |url=https://www.historyworkshop.org.uk/anti-racism/gandhi-the-history-and-memory-of-racism-in-south-africa/ |work=History Workshop |access-date=2026-06-10}}</ref><ref name="auto8" /> About this mixing of the Kaffirs with the Indians, I must confess I feel most strongly. I observed with regret that some Indians were happy to sleep in the same room as the Kaffirs…. This is a matter of shame to us.<ref name="auto1"/>" He also lobbied the Governor directly for separate lavatories, telling him that "Indian prisoners should never be lodged with Kaffirs."<ref name="auto1"/>

===Warnings against social contact===
In 1910 Gandhi warned Indians against contact with Black women, writing: "Some Indians do have contacts with Kaffir women. I think such contacts are fraught with grave danger. Indians would do well to avoid them altogether."<ref name="auto1"/><ref name="auto10"/><ref name="auto8"/>

Some of his supporters say that Gandhi in his later age had evolved past his racial views and ceased using racial slurs towards Africans.<ref>{{Cite journal |last=Rao |first=Rahul |date=2023 |title=Gandhi falling … and rising |url=https://research-repository.st-andrews.ac.uk/bitstream/handle/10023/28081/Rao_2023_JHG_Gandhi_falling_CC.pdf |journal=Journal of Historical Geography |volume=82 |publisher=[[Elsevier]] |doi=10.1016/j.jhg.2023.07.001}}</ref>

===Support for British imperial structures===
Gandhi for much of his early political life operated within and expressed loyalty to British imperial frameworks.<ref>{{Cite journal |title=Moral Empire and the Global Meaning of Gandhi's Anti-imperialism |journal=The Review of Politics |publisher=Cambridge University Press |date=2022 |url=https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/review-of-politics/article/moral-empire-and-the-global-meaning-of-gandhis-antiimperialism/D795B4A37446086725D58D19C176822D}}</ref> He strongly believed that the British Empire was for the welfare of the entire world and maintained this view for a long time. ==Views on caste and Dalit rights==
===Defence of the varna system===
Gandhi's position for decades was that the reform of untouchability within the caste structure, not the abolition of caste itself.<ref name=":2">{{Cite web |last=Ilaiah Shepherd |first=Kancha |title=Not So 'Mahatma': The Regressive Views of Gandhi on Caste and Gender |url=https://www.lawctopus.com/academike/mahatma-gandhi-on-caste-gender/ |work=Academike |access-date=4 June 2026}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |title=Understanding Gandhi's View on the Caste System and Social Reforms |url=https://gandhi.study/human-rights-indian-perspective/understanding-gandhi-caste-system-social-reforms/ |work=Gandhi & Peace Studies |date=27 December 2025 |access-date=4 June 2026}}</ref> Even within his vision of a Gandhian utopia, the Shudras were to continue as a servile class, and Dalits were to be integrated into the Shudra varna rather than liberated from the caste order entirely.<ref name=":2" /><ref>{{Cite web |last=Karuppusamy |first=Karthik Raja |title='Never a Mahatma': A Look at Ambedkar's Gandhi |url=https://thewire.in/history/mahatma-gandhi-jayanti-ambedkar-caste |work=The Wire |date=2 October 2020 |access-date=4 June 2026}}</ref>

===Response to Dalit school segregation===
When Dalits in Kavitha village demanded their children attend the same school as caste Hindus and faced a boycott in 1935, Gandhi's response was: "There is no help like self-help. God helps those who help themselves. If the Harijans concerned will carry out their reported resolve to wipe the dust of Kavitha off their feet, they will not only be happy themselves but they will pave the way for others similarly treated".<ref name=":2" /><ref>{{Cite book |last=Ambedkar |first=B.R. |title=What Congress and Gandhi Have Done to the Untouchables |publisher=Thacker |location=Bombay |date=1945 |chapter=X |url=https://jan.ucc.nau.edu/~sj6/Ambedkar%20What%20Congress%20and%20Gandhi%20CHAPTER%20X.pdf}}</ref>

==Protests and statue removals==

===South Africa===
