Monetizable problem solving is the practice of finding a problem that people want solved and building a repeatable way to solve it for pay. The idea is often summed up in the saying "if you want a business, solve a problem." This article explains why money tends to follow solved problems, offers a simple test for telling a paid opportunity apart from a mere annoyance, and surveys the kinds of problems, business models, and channels that people use today. It is written for readers who want to solve problems in daily living and improve their finances, and it links to related pages such as Business, Business ideas, and Opportunity engineering.

The core idea
A business earns money when it creates value that someone is willing to pay for. Value appears when a person moves from a worse situation to a better one: a leaking pipe is fixed, a form is filed on time, a child learns to read, a lonely person finds a group. The size of the payment depends on a few factors.

* Value. How much better off is the person after the problem is solved? Saving someone an hour is worth less than saving their home from water damage.
* Willingness to pay. People pay for some things readily and resist paying for others, even when the value is high. Many people will pay a plumber but expect advice to be free.
* Urgency. A problem that must be solved today commands a better price than one that can wait. Emergency repair is a classic example.
* Frequency. A problem that returns every week or month supports steady income. A problem that happens once in a lifetime needs a constant flow of new customers.
* Who pays versus who benefits. The person with the problem is not always the person with the money. A parent pays for tutoring that benefits a child. An employer pays for training that benefits a worker. Insurers, governments, and landlords also pay for problems they do not personally feel. Knowing who holds the budget is often the key to a workable business.

Money, in this view, is a signal. It tells you that a problem matters enough to someone that they will trade their own resources to make it go away.

A quick test for a monetizable problem
Before investing time or money, run a candidate problem through five plain questions.

# Is it painful? People must actually feel the problem. Mild inconveniences rarely open wallets.
# Is it frequent? The problem should occur often, either for each customer or across many customers.
# Does someone pay? There must be a person or organization with both money and the authority to spend it on a fix.
# Can you reach them? You need a practical way to find and talk to those buyers, such as a neighborhood, a trade group, a forum, or a search term they use.
# Can you solve it repeatedly? A one-time clever fix is a favor. A process you can repeat, teach, or automate is a business.

A problem that passes all five is worth testing. A problem that fails two or more is usually better treated as a hobby, a volunteer project, or a learning exercise.

Categories of problems people pay to solve
Most paid work falls into a handful of familiar categories. The list below gives one example for each.

<div style="column-count:2; column-gap:2em;">
* Time: meal preparation for busy families.
* Money: helping people cut recurring bills.
* Health: fitness coaching for beginners.
* Safety: installing smoke alarms and locks.
* Information and knowledge: research reports on a niche market.
* Skills: lessons in a trade or a language.
* Belonging and connection: clubs and local meetups.
* Status and identity: grooming, fashion, and personal branding.
* Logistics: moving, delivery, and errand running.
* Compliance and paperwork: permit filing and bookkeeping.
* Maintenance and repair: appliance, bicycle, or roof repair.
* Entertainment and boredom: games, tours, and live events.
* Meaning: retreats, mentoring, and purposeful volunteering programs.

Many strong businesses sit where two categories overlap. A bookkeeping service saves both time and money. A walking group touches health and belonging.

Ways to get paid for a solution
Once a problem is clear, the next question is how the solution turns into income. The table compares common models.

Model !! How it earns !! Example !! Good fit when
Service || Fee per job or per hour || House cleaning, tutoring || Skill is personal and trust matters
Product || Sale of a physical or digital item || A tool, a template, a printed guide || The solution can be packaged once and sold many times
Software or subscription || Recurring monthly or yearly fee || Scheduling app for salons || The problem repeats and can be automated
Marketplace || Commission on each transaction || Platform linking tutors and students || Many buyers and sellers struggle to find each other
Content and education || Course fees, sponsorship, or advertising || Video lessons on home repair || People want to learn to solve the problem themselves
Community or membership || Membership dues || Paid peer group for freelancers || Ongoing support and connection matter
Brokerage or matching || Finder fee || Matching small firms with accountants || Buyers lack time or knowledge to choose well
Maintenance contract || Fixed recurring fee for upkeep || Yearly heating system service || Equipment needs regular care
Licensing || Royalties for use of a method or design || Licensing a training curriculum || Others can deliver your solution at scale

These models can be combined. A repair technician might sell services, a maintenance contract, and a short course for do-it-yourself customers.

In person, online, and agent-delivered
Solutions reach customers through three broad channels.

In person. Trades, local services, and care work remain essential because many problems are physical. Plumbing, child care, elder care, landscaping, and hair cutting cannot be downloaded. In-person work is often easier to start, since neighbors can see the result, and harder to scale, since it depends on hours worked.

Online. The internet lets one person serve customers far away. Common forms include content, digital products, software as a service, and freelancing in writing, design, or programming. Online work scales better but faces wider competition, so a narrow and clearly named problem helps. The page Turning a wiki into income explores one example.

Agent-delivered. Software agents that use AI can now carry out multi-step tasks such as research, monitoring prices or news, filling in routine paperwork, and running parts of small online businesses. A person can offer a service that is largely delivered by agents under human supervision; see How to have Grok Bot build and run a small online business. Agents can also be customers. They pay for access to data, APIs, and specialized tools, which creates room for businesses that serve agents directly. Over time, markets for agent services may grow, as described in Agent profiles and a wiki-based agent economy. Human oversight, clear accountability, and honest disclosure remain important in this channel.

Past, present, and future
The kinds of problems people pay to solve change as technology and society change. The table offers a simplified overview.

Era !! Typical problems !! How solved !! How paid
Pre-industrial crafts and trades || Food, shelter, tools, clothing || Skilled artisans and farmers || Barter, coin, fees to craftspeople
Industrial manufacturing || Scarcity of affordable goods || Factories and mass production || Wages and retail purchase
Service economy || Lack of time and expertise || Professionals and service firms || Fees, salaries, insurance
Internet era || Finding information and reaching customers || Websites, search, e-commerce || Advertising, online sales
Platform and gig era || Matching supply with demand quickly || Apps linking workers and customers || Commissions, per-task pay
Agent era || Overload of tasks, data, and paperwork || AI agents supervised by people || Subscriptions, usage fees, agent-to-agent payments
Possible post-scarcity future || Meaning, health span, coordination || Communities, research, new institutions || Uncertain; may include shared income and reputation systems

The last row is speculative. If basic goods become very cheap, the remaining hard problems may concern purpose, long and healthy lives, and getting large groups to cooperate. Related discussions appear in Basic income experiments around the world and Strategies for negligible engineered misery.

Opportunity areas now
Several areas show clear and growing needs. They are starting points for research, not promises.

* Aging and longevity support: helping people stay active, independent, and informed as they age.
* Care for elders: companionship, transport, home safety checks, and support for family caregivers.
* Energy and home repair: insulation, efficient heating and cooling, and fixing older homes.
* Privacy and security: helping households and small firms protect accounts and data.
* Helping small businesses use AI: setup, training, and safe everyday workflows.
* Verification and trust: checking facts, credentials, and the origin of content.
* Local resilience: backup power, food skills, and neighborhood preparedness.
* Education and reskilling: practical training for people whose jobs are changing.
* Decentralized infrastructure: community networks, local energy, and open tools.

Finding and testing a problem
Good problems are often hiding in plain sight. Useful sources include:

* Complaints. Listen when friends, customers, or coworkers say "I hate dealing with this."
* Your own frustrations. Problems you understand deeply are easier to explain and solve.
* Job boards. Repeated postings for the same task show a lasting need.
* Forums and review sites. Look for recurring questions and one-star reviews.
* Paperwork people hate. Forms, renewals, and filings are reliable sources of demand.
* Red-link gaps. On a wiki, a missing page can reveal a topic people seek but cannot find.

Validate cheaply before building. Talk to ten or more possible buyers and ask how they handle the problem today and what it costs them. Offer to solve it by hand for a few customers before writing software or buying equipment. Put up a simple page describing the offer and see whether anyone asks to buy. A weekend test, as in Turning a side project into a weekend campaign, can reveal more than months of planning.

Pricing basics. Price by the value to the customer, not only by your cost. Know your costs so you do not lose money on each sale. Look at what people pay for current alternatives. Start with a clear and simple price, and raise it as your results improve. Recurring pricing suits recurring problems.

Ethics and pitfalls
A business built on real problem solving should leave customers better off. Basic principles include:

* Do not create problems to sell solutions. Manufacturing fear, breaking things on purpose, or spreading false alarms is dishonest and often illegal.
* Avoid exploiting distress. People in crisis may pay almost anything. Fair pricing and clear terms protect them and your reputation.
* Make honest claims. Describe results you can actually deliver and avoid exaggerated promises.
* Follow the law. Licenses, permits, taxes, consumer protection, and privacy rules apply. See Business ethics.

Common mistakes include building before talking to customers, choosing a problem nobody will pay for, serving buyers you cannot reach, pricing too low to survive, trying to serve everyone at once, and ignoring the difference between the user and the buyer. Another mistake is falling in love with a solution and then searching for a problem to fit it. Making the work itself engaging can help people persist through early setbacks, as discussed in Making productive work as engaging as games.

Discussion questions, essay ideas, and learning related AI prompt ideas
Discussion questions
* Which problem in your daily life would you gladly pay to have solved, and why?
* When the person who benefits is different from the person who pays, how does that change a business?
* Are there problems that should not be solved for profit?

Essay ideas
* Compare how one problem, such as getting clothing, was solved and paid for in three different eras.
* Argue for or against the claim that AI agents will create more paid problems than they remove.

AI prompt ideas
* Help me list ten frustrations from my week and rate each with the five-question monetizable problem test.
* Suggest three low-cost ways to validate a home repair service in my town before I spend money.
* Explain the difference between who pays and who benefits using examples from elder care.
* Compare a service model and a subscription model for a bookkeeping business for freelancers.
