The word has been repeatidly used in Indian movies as well as songs and it has recently been caught emerging in the new Bengali songs. It is often used by people who tend to live in the world of fantasies of the Bollywood thinking life to be as realistic as it was pictured in fiction movies. Obviously the movies comprehend the word in a sweet way and use the word in referance to a charming and handsome personality in the film but there is more to this word than a simple sweetheart or a person you love.
In some villages of Punjab, Pakistan and Punjab, India as well as other Punjabi territories the word is used by school and college students having a total different meaning and a disgrace to the person who is being called such a thing.

The word is moslty used to cover up the talks of teenagers in front of respected adults. As a 'Phool' is a flower no one can think of it in a way other than that. Similarly 'Sohan' is used as a code word for a penis of person in slang Punjabi. The word originated in the slang version of the language due to the same analogy to hide the talks of these children in from of their elderly and respected individuals.
The word is still used in movies and romantic songs but some make fun of it and take it in a way that is totally not romantic and comfortable for someone to hear.
While the word is growing it still holds both meanings depending on with whom and where it it being used.
