The school subject portals aim to give a more friendly and useful access route for users interested in pre-tertiary (pre-school, primary and secondary) education. In Wikiversity's early days, departments established themselves in a university-orientated fashion, perhaps choking out other initiatives. The school subject portals aim to offer users an alternative route to resources in their subject area which is free of the extreme specialisation which occurs at tertiary level and which is friendly and comprehensible to schoolchildren.
