Following the emergence of graphic design as an industry[1], towards the end of the twentieth century, a new generation of graphic designers were trained as professionals at graphic design schools and art schools.
This was a departure from the early days of graphic design when there was simply an Arts and Crafts movement consisting of artisans who broke away from traditional designs for everyday items and began to invent their own. The first graphic designers of the twentieth century became increasingly influential,[2] and spawned the industry that exists today.
The emergence of the graphic design industry coincided with increased international migration and this saw designers trained in one country moving to and setting up practices in another. This globalisation of graphic design[3] continues and is most evident in major worldwide design centres[4] such as London and New York, where a large number of young foreign graphic designers have settled.
