The Australian Medical Student Journal is the national peer-reviewed medical journal for Australian students in medically-related disciplines. It is staffed entirely by medical students and is currently based in Sydney. Peer-review is by academics associated with Australian medical schools, or clinicians at Australian teaching hospitals
The AMSJ was conceived at the University of New South Wales, and from early 2009, medical students Matt Schiller, Timothy Yang, and Hassan Ahmad were responsible for making the idea a reality. The inaugural issue was produced by a volunteer staff of 22 students.[1]
The inaugural issue was officially launched on the 29th of April, 2010, at the Lowy Cancer Research Institute in Sydney. It was attended by medical students from around the country, and Federal AMA President, Andrew Pesce, was present to cut the ribbon from the first box of copies.
The journal now has a central staff of 34 students, representing four universities, as well as a representative at each medical school Australia-wide.
A similar but not related journal is produced at Australian National University - the Medical Student Journal of Australia.[2]
