Template:Infobox company tado GmbH is a German technology company headquartered in Munich (Germany) and a manufacturer of home thermostats and air conditioning controls. tado° is the European leader in intelligent home climate management. As a cross-manufacturer platform, tado° Smart Thermostats and services connect with any kind of heating or cooling system for all kinds of homes. Having secured over USD 100m in funding and with 180 employees, tado° reshapes the way energy is consumed for more comfort, savings, and wellbeing at home.

About

The heating and cooling of buildings is one of the main global consumers of energy and sources of carbon emissions. In Europe, heating and cooling in buildings and industry accounts for half of the continent’s energy consumption, making it the biggest energy end-use sector ahead of transport. [1]

The company focuses on intelligent home climate management and offers several solutions for consumers and businesses. This includes smart thermostats and AC controls for consumers, and SaaS products for energy utilities and heating service companies. As a cross-manufacturer solution, tado° works seamlessly with any kind of heating or cooling system for all kinds of homes.

tado° is an integral part of the energy transition from centralised power distribution to user-centric virtual power plants. Managing a capacity of over 4GW of energy, tado° is equipped to maximise agile tariffs and demand response requirements for a more energy-efficient, sustainable, and smarter grid.

Furthermore, tado° offers remote diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repair services of heating systems for users, energy utilities and heating services companies.

History

tado° was founded in Munich by Christian Deilmann, Johannes Schwarz and Valentin Sawadski in September 2011.[2] The company name is derived from the Japanese salutation "tadaima" ("I'm back home") and "okaeri" ("Welcome back") since Geofencing has been the first key feature of the tado° system already in 2011. [3]

In 2012; the company’s first-generation smart thermostat and app went to market in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, followed by a UK launch in 2013. [4] In 2014, [5] tado° launched its second-generation smart thermostat across Europe followed by the global launch of its Smart AC Control in 2015. [6] In 2016, tado° introduced its Smart Radiator Thermostats in Europe for multi-room control. Toon Bouten joined the company as CEO in 2017. [7] In 2019, tado° launched its SaaS product - tado° 360 [8] - which remotely monitors the status and health of boilers.

tado° has received over $100 USD in venture capital funding and investment. Investors include Amazon, [9] Total, E.ON, the European Investment Bank, and Siemens.

Products

All tado° products are built around the tado° app and seamlessly integrate with Amazon Alexa, the Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit. The tado° app has many Skills and features which include:

  • Geofencing - tado° turns off your heating or AC when the last person leaves home and turns it on in time for the first person’s arrival.
  • Weather Adaptation - tado° takes local weather forecasts into account. It adjusts your heating and cooling accordingly to save energy.
  • Open Window Detection - tado° detects open windows and reminds you to turn your heating or AC off to save more energy.
  • Air Comfort - tado° advises you on how to keep the air in your home healthy. It also gives you insights about the outdoor air quality and the current pollen forecast in your area.
  • Smart Schedule - tado° lets you plan your desired day and night time temperatures in time blocks based on your routine.
  • Auto-Assist - Automatically adjusts the temperature if you leave or arrive home, or if a window gets opened. It also protects your heating system against breakdowns. Auto-Assist is a paid subscription service that costs £2.99/€2.99 a month or £24.99//€24.99 a year.
  • Care & Protect - Monitors your heating system around the clock, notifies you if it detects unusual behavior and helps you to solve possible problems yourself (part of Auto-Assist)
  • Stats & Analytics - The tado° app gives you insights into how your indoor climate has changed over time and how much energy you’ve saved so far.
  • Boiler Repair Services - Allows users to book an experienced installer or request a quote directly in the app if their heating system needs repairs, maintenance or upgrading. [10]

An independent study from the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics found that using a tado° Smart Thermostat can save up to 31% on a home’s heating costs. [11]
