Bellevue Education International Limited is the parent company of Bellevue Education Group, an education management company founded in 2003.[1] It has grown rapidly and now owns eleven independent schools in the UK and two Swiss boarding schools.[2][3][4]

The company's Chief Executive, and founder, Mark Malley, owns approximately 17% of the shares. The other major investor is Bellevue's Chairman, Marwan Naja, an entrepreneur focusing on the education sector, and owner of Hong Kong based companies Plato One Ltd and Plato Two Ltd which together hold the other 83% of the shares.[2][5][6][7] He also owns the Geneva-based investment company Manixer,[8] which describes itself as an investor in Bellevue Education.[9] Manixer also provides services to Bellevue Education.[5] The Bellevue Education website says it has significant financial backing from a small number of British and Swiss families who are passive investors in the group.[10]

Through the Bellevue Place Education Trust, set up in partnership with Place Group, Bellevue Education also runs, or has been pre-approved to run, six UK state-funded academies, under the Free School programme.[11][12] These are financed on a non-profit basis via a master funding agreement with the Department for Education.[13][14]

Company history

Bellevue Education Group Limited was founded under the name House Education by Mark Malley in 2003, when he bought Norfolk House preparatory school in London.[1][15][16] He also became the headteacher of the school.[17]

In 2008 House Education was renamed The Really Great Education Company Limited (EDCO) and purchased Weston Green School in Surrey.[1][15][18] It also purchased Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School in East Sussex in 2010,[15][19] an expansion which contributed to its identification as an aspirant company in the proprietorial schools sector.[20]

The company adopted the name Bellevue Education Group in 2011, prior to acquiring three more independent schools: Edenhurst Prep School in Staffordshire, Brabyns Preparatory School in Cheshire, and Gateway School in Buckinghamshire.[1][15] These purchases, and the additional purchase of a share interest in Gstaad International School, were financed by investment from Plato Two Limited.[5]

In 2012, Bellevue Education Group was reported to be jointly owned by Mark Malley, with a 35% stake, and its Chairman Marwan Naja, owner of Plato One Ltd and Plato Two Ltd.[2] Further investment in that year by Plato Two Ltd coincided with the establishment of Bellevue Education International Limited, of which Bellevue Education Group became a wholly owned subsidiary.[5][7] The parent company completed the acquisition of Gstaad International School, later re-opened as Surval Gstaad, and purchased a second Swiss boarding school, Surval Mont-Fleuri, subsequently renamed as Surval Montreaux.[15][21]

Back in the UK, Bellevue Education Group opened a new independent school, Wandsworth Preparatory School.[15][22]

Also in 2012, Bellevue Place Education Trust was formed, as a partnership between Bellevue Education Group and Place Group.[23][24]

During 2013, Bellevue Education Group acquired two more UK independent schools: Montessori House Nursery in Muswell Hill and Elmhurst School in South Croydon,[15] and the Bellevue Place Education Trust opened their first state-funded free school, Rutherford House in Balham.[25] The company was reported to be partnering with philosopher AC Grayling on another free school project,[26] but that bid was unsuccesful.[27]

Bellevue acquired two more UK independent schools in 2014, making a total of 11: Forest Preparatory School in Altrincham and Forest Park Preparatory School in Sale, Cheshire.[15][28] Through the Bellevue Place Education Trust it also opened two more free schools, Braywick Court School in Maidenhead and Whitehall Park School in Islington.[29] The establishment of Whitehall Park was controversial, being opposed by the local council and some local residents,[30][31][32] and criticised over the cost of refurbishing the school building.[33]

Later in 2014 the Bellevue Place Education Trust obtained Government "pre-approval" to open four more free schools in London in 2015: Richmond Bridge Primary,[34] Kilburn Grange,[35] Halley House,[36] and Watling Park.[11][37]
