Template:Infobox company/sandboxBellevue Education International Limited is the parent company of Bellevue Education Group, an education management company founded in 2003.[1] [2] The group has
grown rapidly and now owns ten preparatory schools in the UK and two senior schools in the UK and Switzerland.[3][4][5] Based in Hampton Court, Surrey, Bellevue Education educates children and teenagers aged 3 to 19 through its nurseries, pre-preparatory, preparatory and senior schools and colleges.[6]
The company's Chief Executive, and founder, Mark Malley, owns approximately 17% of the shares. The other major investor is Bellevue's Chairman, Marwan Naja, an entrepreneur focusing on the education sector, and owner of Hong Kong-based companies Plato One Ltd and Plato Two Ltd which together hold the other 83% of the shares.[3][7][8][9] He also owns the Geneva-based investment company Manixer,[10] which describes itself as an investor in Bellevue Education.[11] Manixer also provides services to Bellevue Education.[7] Bellevue Education has significant financial backing from a small number of British and Swiss families who are passive investors in the group.[12]
Bellevue Education operates seven preparatory Free Schools across London and the South-East through a joint venture with Place Group[13][14]. The Bellevue Place Education Trust (BPET) is a multi-academy sponsor with a core purpose and responsibility to establish, maintain and manage state funded Free Schools.[15] The Free Schools are financed on a non-profit basis via a master funding agreement with the Department for Education.[16][17]
Company history
Bellevue Education Group Limited was founded under the name House Education by Mark Malley in 2003, when he bought Norfolk House preparatory school in London.[1][18][19] He also became the headteacher of the school.[20]
In 2008 House Education was renamed The Really Great Education Company Limited (EDCO) and purchased Weston Green School in Surrey.[1][18][21] It also purchased Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School in East Sussex in 2010,[18][22] an expansion which contributed to its identification as an aspirant company in the proprietorial schools sector.[23]
The company adopted the name Bellevue Education Group in 2011, prior to acquiring three more independent schools: Edenhurst Prep School in Staffordshire, Brabyns Preparatory School in Cheshire, and Gateway School in Buckinghamshire.[1][18] These purchases, and the additional purchase of a share interest in Gstaad International School, were financed by investment from Plato Two Limited.[7]
In 2012, Bellevue Education Group was reported to be jointly owned by Mark Malley, with a 35% stake, and its Chairman Marwan Naja, owner of Plato One Ltd and Plato Two Ltd.[3] Further investment in that year by Plato Two Ltd coincided with the establishment of Bellevue Education International Limited, of which Bellevue Education Group became a wholly owned subsidiary.[7][9] The parent company completed the acquisition of Gstaad International School, later re-opened as Surval Gstaad, and purchased a second Swiss boarding school, Surval Mont-Fleuri, subsequently renamed as Surval Montreux.[18][24]
Back in the UK, Bellevue Education Group opened a new independent school, Wandsworth Preparatory School.[18][25]
During 2013, Bellevue Education Group acquired two more UK independent schools: Montessori House Nursery in Muswell Hill and Elmhurst School in South Croydon.[18]
Bellevue acquired two more UK independent schools in 2014, making a total of 11: Forest Preparatory School in Altrincham and Forest Park Preparatory School in Sale, Greater Manchester.[18][26]
Bellevue Place Education Trust
In 2012, Bellevue Place Education Trust was formed, as a partnership between Bellevue Education Group and Place Group.[27][28]
The following year the trust opened its first state-funded free school, Rutherford House in Balham.[29] It was reported to be partnering with philosopher AC Grayling on another free school project,[30] but that bid was unsuccessful.[31]
The trust opened two more free schools in 2014; Braywick Court School in Maidenhead and Whitehall Park School in Islington.[32] The establishment of Whitehall Park on the former site of Ashmount School was controversial, being opposed by the local council and some local residents,[33][34][35] and criticised over the cost of refurbishing the school building.[36]
Later in 2014 the Bellevue Place Education Trust obtained Government "pre-approval" to open four more free schools in London in 2015: Richmond Bridge Primary,[37] Kilburn Grange,[38] Halley House,[39] and Watling Park.[40][41] However, the trust was unable to secure a site in the Richmond Bridge area, so the proposed Richmond Bridge Primary School was renamed to Deer Park School.[42]
The location of the 'Deer Park' school has also led to local controversy and opposition from some local residents who question the suitability of the chosen site. It is located on a busy junction of the A316 at Manor Circus, on a red route, an arterial road from the M3 into London. As a result, there are considerable issues with safety, access, traffic, pollution, noise and privacy. The building planning application is anticipated in Q3 2015 and these matters will be considered.[43]
An on line and paper based petition asking Bellevue, the Council and the Department of Education to find a better location gained over 1200 signatures from local community members and triggered a debate at Richmond Council in July 2015. No representative from Bellevue Education turned up to hear concerns of residents. This campaign is similar to that being run in Maidenhead by a group called 'Save Braywick Park'[44]
