Kyuzo Mifune demonstrates Kata Guruma

Kata Guruma is one of the traditional forty throws of Judo as developed by Jigaro Kano, and is said to have been invented by Kano. Kata Guruma belongs to the third group, Sankyo, of the traditional throwing list, Gokyo (no waza) [1], of Kodokan Judo. It is also part of the current 67 Throws of Kodokan Judo. [2] Because the technique is not a sweep nor a trip and requires tori to grab uke into a carry, it is categorized as a hand technique, Te-Waza. [3]

If you have the time, keep an eye out for Mifune's version of Kata Guruma in Kodokan Judo With Master Kyuzo Mifune. His entry is much higher, almost standing, and only bows down at the actual throw.

Similar Techniques, Variants, and Aliases

In the video, The Essence of Judo, Kyuzo Mifune demonstrates three variations of Kata Guruma, the above clip showing the first. In the second variation, Mifune steps behind uke, and in the third he steps behind uke and grabs uke's left leg instead. In all three variations, uke is lifted up to tori's shoulder behind tori's head, and then dropped forward (as in the above clip).
