He moved to the United States in the early 1950s and became a naturalized citizen in 1957. He was educated at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and earned his B.A. in 1962. The Society for the Anthropology of Consciousness founded in 1984 by Joseph Long left school to pursue and his Ph.D.in 1970. Carlos Castaneda was a controversial author of a series of books that recounted his training in traditional Native American Shamanism.
