House of Dust is an architectural work built in 2013 in Rome, designed by the Italian architect Antonino Cardillo. The project is characterised by a combination of different elements: use of the golden ratio, coarse plaster walls and brown ceilings, arched doorways, walls and ceilings coloured in a pale shade of pink, and a cylindrical ghostly white curtain.[1]

Background

The work was designed and built between September 2012 and March 2013 in a 100 m² apartment in the Rione Ludovisi of Rome.[1]

Design

The architect describes this house as a conceptual celebration of dust. Its design draws inspiration from primordial caverns, Renaissance grottos, the nymphaeum of Rome’s Villa Doria Pamphilj and the faint Liberty facades along Via Veneto. Furthermore, it explores the idea of buildings as instruments for light creation, emphasising the importance of opaque materials in architecture to capture and manipulate light.[2]

Reception

The work has been featured in international lifestyle and architecture magazines.[3][1][4][5] Nacho Alegre included House of Dust in a list of ten significant contemporary interior works from 2010 to 2015.[6]

The work has been cited in Dezeen's selections of pink‑hued interiors and exposed‑plaster residential spaces.[7][8]

Trend‑forecasting

International trend agencies have included the work in reports forecasting trends for several seasons from 2015 to 2019.[9][10][11][12]

Exhibition

The work was exhibited at the XXI Triennale di Milano (2016).[13]
