This project was born in middle of 1994. That was time when compilers were not able to produce highly optimized executables but CPU were too slow. That caused that many programmers coded executables with using of assemblers. That days computer's industry in may countries including Russia was free from Internet and it was problematic to find out any knowledge about CPU. Many programs produced errors and it was too difficult to understand the true source of problems. The compiler may contain the many bugs within itself same as source of program may contain wrongly coded places. After long attempts to understand what may cause wrong working of own programs the author of Biew became coded own disassembler. Most probably the needs of author could be covered by existing disassemblers but lack of possibility to get them became main reason to initiate own disassembler. Yes, the author of Biew was familiar with some disassemblers that days like hiew and qview. But these disassemblers were designed to cover only half needs of the author of biew. When the project achieved the functionality of hiew that days, the author became to redistribute own project with friends. BIEW is a multiplatform, portable viewer of binary files with a built-in editor that functions in binary, hexadecimal and disassembler modes. It uses native Intel syntax for disassembly. Features include an AVR/Java/x86-i386-AMD64/ARM-XScale/PPC64 disassemblers, a Russian code pages converter, full preview of MZ, NE, PE, NLM, coff32, elf formats, partial preview of a.out, LE, LX, Phar Lap formats, and a code navigator.

History

This project was born in middle of 1994. At that time compilers were not able to produce highly optimized executables but CPUs were too slow. That caused many programmers to code executables using assemblers. That day's computer industry in many countries, including Russia had no Internet and it was problematic to find information about CPUs. Many programs produced errors and it was too difficult to understand the true source of the problems. The compiler might contain many bugs within itself, or the program may have errors in the source code. After a long time trying to understand the causes of the defects in his own programs, the author of Biew coded his own disassembler. Perhaps the needs of author could be covered by existing disassemblers but it was impossible to get them, and so he wrote his own. The author of Biew was familiar with some disassemblers, like hiew and qview. But these were covered only half s of the author's needs. When the project achieved the functionality of hiew, the author started redistributing his project to friends.

Initially Biew was closed-source, but friends helped to improve the project with new ideas and in rare cases with new code. Later, after purchasing a modem the author decided to open the source and publish it on the Internet. The author understood that commercial profit from selling executables of biew would be too low to make much money. From the other side, attracting volunteers would permit serious improvements of the project. On 16 may 1999, the sources were published at sourceforge.net.
