Template:Infobox company tado° is a European market leader in intelligent home climate control solutions. With its Smart Thermostats for heating and the Smart AC Control for cooling, tado° reshapes the way energy is consumed at home. The tado° Smart Climate Assistant app uses features like Geofencing and Weather Adaption to save up to a third of your energy use, while enhancing comfort.
History
tado° was founded in 2011 by Johannes Schwarz, Christian Deilmann, and Valentin Sawadski.[1] The company name is derived from the Japanese salutation "tadaima" ("I'm back home") and "okaeri" ("Welcome back").[2] The company's first product, tado° Heating, was launched in November 2012 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and in 2013 in the United Kingdom.[3]
In the beginning of 2014, tado° Cooling underwent a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter.[4][5]
In July 2014, tado° closed a €10m ($13.6m) funding round from, among others, Target Partners and Shortcut Ventures.[6]
The company's second product, tado° Smart AC Control, for intelligent cooling was launched in Europe and the USA in June 2015. The launch event took place in New York City.[7]
In October 2015, tado° raised €15m in a fresh round of funding and in April 2016 secured another €20m in VC funding, led by lead investor INVEN Capital.
tado° launched its Smart Radiator Thermostats in Autumn 2016 to provide full multi-zone control for homes. The company focused on software, services and interoperability in 2017 with the launch of its Smart Climate Assistant software, its integrations with Apple HomeKit and Google Home (to add to Amazon Alexa and IFTTT) and the introduction of its Boiler Repair Services.
Hardware
Besides reducing energy consumption and increasing savings, the tado° Smart Thermostats and Smart AC Control improve residents' overall comfort.[8] tado° detects the absence or presence of residents via smartphone and then adjusts the heating automatically. Weather forecasts and the heating properties of a home such as insulation are taken into account.[9]
One challenge for tado° is the lack of a heterogeneous heating landscape in Europe and the related integration and support of their respective control interfaces. However, tado° has the most compatible Smart Thermostats on the European market and they currently work with more than 18,000 different heating systems.[10][11][12]
In June 2015 tado° launched its second product - the Smart AC Control. The Smart AC Control connects a user’s smartphone to their air conditioner or heat pump. Using their phone’s location, it automatically pre-cools before the first person returns home and turns off when the last person leaves. It allows users to manually control their AC from wherever they are with the mobile smartphone app or tablet.[14] The air conditioner can also be manually operated via the Smart AC Control using the tado° app.[15]
tado° launched its Smart Radiator Thermostats in September 2016. The Smart Radiator Thermostats are used to control thermostatic radiator valves for communal and district heating systems. They regulate radiator valves with or without a room thermostat and provide individual multi-zone control for radiators.
Software
The Smart Climate Assistant
The Smart Climate Assistant is tado°’s latest automated software that enables users to enjoy a comfortable and energy-saving home. The app has many features including:
- Geofencing: The tado° Geofencing feature ensures that the heating/cooling is automatically turned down when the last person leaves home and that it is at the perfect temperature when the first person returns.
- Smart Schedule: Provides personalised schedules with different temperatures at various times of the day.
- Energy Savings Report: This shows how much energy tado° has saved a home on a monthly basis. It also visualises the activities of the tado° Smart Climate Assistant, such as cumulated Geofencing away time, the impact of Weather Adaption, and how often open windows have been detected.
- Building Characteristics: tado° gets to know a user’s home’s unique characteristics and learns the most efficient way to heat it up.
- Open Window Detection: Sudden changes in temperature or humidity when a window is opened are observed by tado°’s Open Window Detection feature. When this occurs, the heating will automatically turn down to save energy.
- Weather Adaption: tado° adapts the heating/cooling to the weather forecast. When sunshine is predicted for example, tado° turns down the heat to leverage the solar gain and avoid overshooting the set temperature for higher efficiency and comfort at home.
Services
In October 2017, tado° launched it’s Boiler Repair Services in the UK, this was then extended to Germany in January 2018. The Boiler Repair Services offers users a carefree package of services focused on keeping their boiler in good health. This includes smart repairing, maintenance, replacing, and insurance services via the tado° app.
