BIEW is a multiplatform, portable viewer of binary files with a built-in editor that functions in binary, hexadecimal and disassembler modes. It uses native Intel syntax for disassembly. Features include an AVR/Java/x86-i386-AMD64/ARM-XScale/PPC64 disassemblers, a Russian code pages converter, full preview of MZ, NE, PE, NLM, coff32, elf formats, partial preview of a.out, LE, LX, Phar Lap formats, and a code navigator.
History
This project was born in middle of 1994. That was time when compilers were not able to produce highly optimized executables but CPU were too slow. That caused that many programmers coded executables with using of assemblers. That days computer's industry in may countries including Russia was free from Internet and it was problematic to find out any knowledge about CPU. Many programs produced errors and it was too difficult to understand the true source of problems. The compiler may contain the many bugs within itself same as source of program may contain wrongly coded places. After long attempts to understand what may cause wrong working of own programs the author of Biew became coded own disassembler. Most probably the needs of author could be covered by existing disassemblers but lack of possibility to get them became main reason to initiate own disassembler. Yes, the author of Biew was familiar with some disassemblers that days like hiew and qview. But these disassemblers were designed to cover only half needs of the author of biew. When the project achieved the functionality of hiew that days, the author became to redistribute own project with friends. Initially Biew was closed-source project but friends helped to improve the project with new ideas and in rare cases with new code. Later after purchasing modem the author decided to open source and publish them in Internet. The author understood that commercial profit from sailing executables of biew would be too low to give good money for the life of author. From other side attracting volunteers would be allow seriously improve the project. And 16 may 1999 at sourceforge.net were published sources of the project.
