Developmental Disabilities

Neurodiversity

Developmental disabilities are often discussed in courses on abnormal psychology as Pervasive Developmental Disorders, where as a course on Psychology of Developmental Disability, such is classified as Developmental Disabilities. Such a course on Developmental Disability has failed to mention Neurodiversity as much as Clinical psychology has failed to mention recovery. In the study of recovery psychology, the recognition of the concept of Neurodiversity and Disability rights movement. Movements like the Autism Rights Movement, The Neurodiversity Movement and groups such as Aspies For Freedom would be deserving of equal discussion as a valid source of information on the phenomena of these conditions. In the same way that recovery psychology, recognizes antipsychiatry and propsychiatry views, to sort out how clinical psychology can further produce recovery (of which it has previously failed,) recovery psychology would acknowledge the prespectives of those who call themselves "Aspies" who feel that they do not need to be fixed, the concept in which they refer to as non-autistic persons as being neurotypical, or persons who force treatment on them as being "curabie". This paralells many antipsychiatry views. A course on Psychology of Developmental Disability might focus more on adaptability rather than recovery. Recovery in the context could mean anything from adaptability to being liberated from forced, unneccessary treatment that is not wanted by the person with autism, to the fight against prejudice.
