This article lays out the case for open design. Starting in rough (very rough) form.
Lowering cost for business to enter into the market
For some companies, the availability of open designs could eliminate some or all of the cost of research and development.
Helping to create business
The availability of open designs could enable easier entry into business markets for entrepreneurs. This could allow for easier means of creating jobs and improving economies.
Lowering price of goods for consumers
Some of the above is based on theory right now. Peer reviewed academic studies should be cited were available and necessary.
