Template:Unreviewed Template:Infobox company tado° GmbH is a German high-tech company headquartered in Munich (Germany) which engages in the intelligent control of heating systems and air conditioners via smartphone App.

History

tado° GmbH was founded in 2011 by Johannes Schwarz, Christian Deilmann and Valentin Sawadski in Munich. They started developing smart thermostats back in 2010 after Christian Deilmann often had to discuss with his roommates during his studies in the U.S. about air conditioning and the intrinsic waste of energy in their shared flat. This is how the idea for tado° arose.[1] The company name is derived from the Japanese salutation “tadaima“ (“I’m back home“) and “okaeri“ (“Welcome back“).[2] Their first product – tado° Heating – was launched in November 2012 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and in 2013 in the United Kingdom.[3] Meanwhile, the product can be purchased in all of Europe. In the beginning of 2014, their new product – tado° Cooling – enabling the intelligent control of air conditioners was introduced on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter and can already be pre-ordered.[4][5] In July 2014, tado° announced that they closed a new round of financing, raising €10m ($13.6m) from Target Partners and Shortcut Ventures and other investors in order to fuel global expansion.[6]

Products

tado° is European market leader for smart thermostats which help save energy and money and are able to improve the comfort of living at the same time.[7]

tado° Heating is an intelligent heating system controller – consisting of hardware and software. tado° detects via smartphone how far the residents are away from home and then adjusts the temperature automatically.[8] The programming of presence and absence times is not required with tado°. The patent-registered algorithms automatically adjust heating performance according to the user’s need. Also, weather forecasts and the heating properties of a home such as insulation are considered.[9] According to a study by the Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP, this means possible savings of up to 31% in energy and heating costs.[10] The main challenge for tado° is the very heterogeneous heating landscape in Europe and the related integration of interfaces so that more than 5,000 different heating systems can be controlled by tado°.[11] Despite this, the installation is easy for the user – no matter which heating model they have.[12]

tado° Cooling is a new product which promises intelligent control of all remote controlled air conditioners. Similarly to tado° Heating, the concept of automatic presence and absence detection is used here; additionally, indoor presence detection is included.[13] The product is not yet officially available, but can be pre-ordered on the company website.
