Welcome to the Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game Research Project (MMORPGRP - pronounced Morp-Group)

There are currently a variety of open source massive multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) projects in existence over at Sourceforge.

There are many novel MMORPG's in existence.

There are also 3d engines such as Crystalspace that are open source.

This research project may attempt to discover how to to integrate the most appropriate technologies to develop an MMORPG that is:

  • Flexible (like a gymnast)
  • Fun (like a fun person)
  • Fast (like a cheetah)
  • Decentralized (like something not central)
  • Secure (like a safe)
  • Light (like a feather)
  • Portable (like a car)
  • Open (like an open door)

Questions to Answer

  • What is the corporate appeal of projects like Second Life?
  • What has contributed to World of Warcraft's amazing success?

The amount of content, support, the blizzard name, the previous warcraft titles, amazing maintainance and updates(patches)

  • How can custom scripting be implemented into an MMORPG?

addons (i.e. WoW using LUA)

  • What would be a more specific and appropriate name for this project?
  • How could security be implemented in a decentralized MMORPG while still keeping the integrity of character abilities and powers?

check abilities/powers etc against a database record and check for increases or decreases according to items or benificial effects and check where they came from and block "bad" ones.

    • How could this question be worded more succinctly and clearly?

Brain storming

Tentatively, the structure will be as follows: A server will hold the place holder of a world, the size of earth, with a sun the size of the sun, and all the planets as they are. I will essentially be a clone of present reality... in a rough, extremely undetailed for (so that one server could initially handle the load). Perhaps all this could be accomplished with 50MB - 1 GB of hard drive space.

Possibly useful open source projects
