The gamma boron discovery controversy relates to a dispute as to which group of scientists discovered the gamma-phase of elemental boron.
The first synthesis of this phase was probably performed by Wentorf in 1965,[citation needed] but the possibility of chemical contamination was not ruled out and no structure solution was given.
The gamma phase was synthesized again in 2004 by J. Chen and V.L. Solozhenko, who proved that they were dealing with a pure boron phase. The structure was solved by A.R. Oganov in 2006. Oganov, Chen, and Solozhenko published their findings in Nature in January 2009.[1]
At the same time, another group consisting of Dubrovinsky, Dubrovinskaia, and Filinchuk published a paper claiming novelty.[2] However, their submission date is 3 November 2008 (in contrast to the much earlier submission date by Oganov-Chen-Solozhenko, 27 January 2007). Oganov and his colleagues maintain that Dubrovinsky et al. had a copy of Oganov's manuscript since 9 December 2006 but refused to acknowledge this fact.[3]
