Legend has it that the 10th century Hoysala king,Veera Ballala,lost and hungry,was offered a humble meal of boiled beans or 'benda kalu' by an old woman.According to legends,the name 'BANGALORE' was derived from 'BENDA KALU URU'(ooru in Kannada means a city). or the city of boiled beans.Historically, Kempegowda I ,a small feudatory of Vijayanagara empire is credited for laying the foundation of the modern city of Bangalore.
