Budhanilkantha School is Nepal's premier boarding high school and middle school. It was established in 1972 with the aim of being the national school of Nepal where gifted children from all of Nepali districts could get educated, including those of poor backgrounds who would otherwise not receive a strong education. The school was a boys-only school until 1995, after which, with the change of administration from a British agency to a Nepali one, it became a coeducational school. It is located on the outskirts of Kathmandu valley.

Present Condition
The school is plagued by a self-serving administration led by Mr. Narayan P Sharma, who recently hatched a plan to increase his tenure as per rules of Ministry of Education. Prevailing problems like increasing drug use and entry into the school through corrupt means continues and individuals associated with the school continue to claim prominence. That is not to say the school does not produce a good number of intelligent/ able students. Most of these students go to foreign countries and climb corporate ladders. Their contribution and impact will be felt in coming days as more and more of them graduate from world renowned universities. However, very few have been known to engage in work related to development of Nepal. This has led many to criticise this elite school as an insitution that does not support the cause it claims to be founded on. It has become more of a "launching ground" for students and teachers alike to go abroad and stay abroad.
At present rumours of students' dissatisfaction with the teachers and 'revolutionary' acts are flying around.
