It was established in 1972 with the aim of being the national school of Nepal where gifted children from all corners of Nepal could get educated, including those from poor economic backgrounds who might otherwise not receive a strong education. More than one-third of the students recieve some form of scholarship from the government or private British organizations to cover the cost of their education and stay in the school. The school was opened by the British who also ran the administration of the school till 1995 afterwhich the administration changed hands to Nepalese. The school was a all boys school until 1992, after which it became a co-educational school. The school educates students from grade 4 to 10 abiding the government curriculum. After completing grade 10, students can choose between studying University of Cambridge GCE A-levels or Higher Secondary Education Board's +2 education programme. Students whose choose the A-level often end up going to prestigious Colleges and Universities in the United States and the United Kingdom.
