Bellevue Education International Limited is an education management company founded in 2003.[1] It has grown rapidly and now owns eleven independent schools in the UK and two Swiss boarding schools.[2] [3] [4]

Through the Bellevue Place Education Trust, set up in partnership with Place Group, Bellevue Education also runs, or has been pre-approved to run, five UK state-funded academies, under the Free School programme.[5] [6]

Bellevue Education's Chief Executive, and founder, Mark Malley, owns 17% of the shares and the remainder are owned by Plato One Ltd and Plato Two Ltd, Hong Kong listed companies controlled by Bellevue Education's chairman Marwan Naja, an entrepreneur and investor focusing on the education sector.[2] [7] [8] [9]

Company history

Bellevue Education Group Limited was founded under the name House Education by Mark Malley in 2003, when he bought Norfolk House preparatory school in London.[1] [10] [11] He also became the headteacher of the school.[12]

In 2008 House Education was renamed The Really Great Education Company Limited (EDCO) and purchased Weston Green School in Surrey.[1] [10] [13] It also purchased Skippers Hill Manor Preparatory School in East Sussex in 2010,[10] [14] an expansion which contributed to its identification as an aspirant company in the proprietorial schools sector.[15]

The company adopted the name Bellevue Education in 2011, prior to acquiring three more independent schools: Edenhurst Prep School in Staffordshire, Brabyns Preparatory School in Cheshire, and Gateway School in Buckinghamshire.[1] [10]

In 2012 the owners of Bellevue Education established parent company Bellevue Education International Limited of which Bellevue Education became a wholly owned subsidiary.[9] The company subsequently acquired two international Swiss boarding schools,[10] In the UK, Bellevue Education opened a new independent school, Wandsworth Preparatory School.[10] [16]

Also in 2012, Bellevue Place Education Trust was formed, in partnership with Place Group.[17] [18]

During 2013, Bellevue Education acquired two more UK independent schools: Montessori House Nursery in Muswell Hill and Elmhurst School in South Croydon,[10] and the Bellevue Place Education Trust opened their first state-funded free school, Rutherford House in Balham. [19] The company was reported to be partnering with philosopher AC Grayling on another free school project,[20] but that bid was unsuccesful.[21]

Bellevue acquired two more UK independent schools in 2014, making a total of 11: Forest Preparatory School in Altrincham and Forest Park Preparatory School in Sale, Cheshire.[10] [22] Through the Bellevue Place Education Trust it also opened two more free schools, Braywick Court School in Maidenhead and Whitehall Park School in Islington.[23] The establishment of Whitehall Park was controversial, being opposed by the local council and some local residents,[24] [25] [26] and criticised over the cost of refurbishing the school building.[27]

Later in 2014 the Bellevue Place Education Trust obtained Government "pre-approval" to open three more free schools in London in 2015: Richmond Bridge Primary,[28] Kilburn Grange,[29] and Halley House.[30] [5]
