The club was established to display a passion for fly fishing to the wider University community.  The term 'Escapism' has been strongly associated with the club, due to the clubs aim to allow students to escape the stresses and strains of University life and place them in the scenic beauty of the Perthshire, Fife & Angus countryside as well as the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

The St Andrews University Fly Fishing Club was founded in 2005 by then first year student William Culbert.

The club was established to display a passion for fly fishing to the wider University community.
