Archive:Learn for Life Nepal Scholarship
The Learn for Life Nepal scholarship program was conceived by Canadian Vanessa Higgott. The concept grew out of the desire to create a sustainable solution to break the cycle of poverty and to empower bright young Nepalese from the Hopeful Home Orphanage. The scholarship was created to help them attend college because once they turned eighteen, they leave the orphanage with no plan in place to face their future. Learn for Life Nepal scholarship was put in place to bridge that gap and help them further their education. ? There are many programs that encourage young Nepalese to study abroad, but once they have been educated elsewhere, they often do not return. One of the goal of the Learn for Life Nepal scholarship program is to keep young educated people in Nepal by enabling them to attend school in their own country.
The recipients of the Learn for Life scholarship program are selected, based on their academic standing, and their ongoing commitment to their community. They are interviewed personally to determine the best course of study for their academic strengths and interests, and are assisted with the application process.
There are two main criteria for maintaining the scholarship: first, academic standing and second, continuous volunteer work. Since the children cannot afford to pay for their studies, Learn for Life Nepal created a program that allowed them to earn their studies. This ensures that they are invested in the program. Although the volunteer work schedule does not interfere with their studies, school must remain their priority.
